Service & Scholarship

Gamma Nu Omega supports our community through various community service projects and scholarship fundraising events. Our activites are shaped by our National Program Objectives.

Fashionetta®

FASHIONETTA®, a trademark program of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., is a 6-month program which exposes our youth to educational, cultural, and social events as well as participation in community service projects and a display of the many talents of the participants. Their months of dedicated effort culminated in an elegant, formal affair that was held on Saturday, November 7, 2009 at the Clarion Townhouse Hotel in Columbia, SC with 12 contestants vying for the titles of Little Miss Fashionetta, Jr. Miss Fashionetta, and Miss Fashionetta. Over the years, members of the sorority have worked primarily with elementary and high school aged girls, but this biennial event marked a return to highlighting middle school aged girls as well. The theme of the event was Fashionetta 2009: Exemplifying Spirit & Promise.

Held every two years and centered around the current International Program Theme of The Heart of ESP: An Extraordinary Service Program, the 2009 Fashionetta provided activities that focused on the following five-pronged platforms: Non-Traditional Entrepreneur, Economic Keys to Success, Economic Growth of the Black Family, Economic Educational Advancement Through Technology (the Undergraduate Signature Program), and Health Resource Management and Economics.

This program, sponsored by the Gamma Nu Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., serves as one of the major fundraising activities and enables the Sorority to support numerous community service projects in the Columbia area. The Gamma Nu Omega Chapter continues to sponsor a community Easter-egg hunt, fitness day activity, and an ESP Kids Club at Arden Elementary. The Chapter continuously supports Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Richland County Public Library, Palmetto Legal Services, Columbia Urban League, NAACP, Palmetto Children»s Hospital, Breast Cancer Walk for Life, and many other community initiatives. It is through its fundraising efforts that the Gamma Nu Omega Chapter has awarded over $300,000 in scholarships over the years to students in the Columbia Metropolitan area.

The 2009 Fashionetta Court consisted of the following: 2009 Little Miss Fashionetta: Little Miss Reagan Nicole Davis; 1st Runner Up: Little Miss Essence H. Perkins; 2009 Jr. Miss Fashionetta: Miss Kelsey Jonae Houston; 1st Runner Up: Miss Alexi Marye Watkins; and 2009 Miss Fashionetta: Miss Kimberly Jasmine Legette; 1st Runner-Up: Miss Velicia Estelle Young.
